new attitude

I mod'ed my holga to take 35mm film - fun! I even wrote on the back of my camera "lens cap?" so I'm all set. here's what I think is a good shot on medium format film, well mainly because I remembered to take off the lens cap ;)

I saw some movies!

I saw the 40 year old virgin this weekend and holy COW is steve carell funnAY! I want to quote the entire movie, so uncomfortable, so awesome! there were two sides to that billboard, and they both hurt equally! sorry to jendhi and mike for talking throughout the entire movie! then I actually went to a movie theater for the first time in 8 mos and saw xmen3 - the cheese factor was a little higher in this one but I love me some logan! and lastly, mike works with a guy who's friend directed the waco documentary. great documentary. really really horrifying that our govt massacred those people, right? he's been audited 6 times. pfft. I get more and more libertarian every day.

THE NEW PHONEBOOK IS HERE!

muse's new album "showbiz" is out!

of course it's good, it's muse.

[edit June 12, 2006]

hooookay! I'm a total retard!

showbiz (1999) is apparently their FIRST album! but it's SO GOOD! I mean especially since they took 2 huge steps backwards with origin of symmetry (2001) and even hullabaloo (2002) isn't as polished, I would place this album much closer to absolution (2003), who knew! but for reals new muse in july: black holes (2006) and I can't wait!

rob d scores again

rob's soundtracky album "furious angels" is still working for him, most recently "will you follow me" is in an exxon mobil commercial featuring the opening ceremony of the winter olympics. "clubbed to death" was on the matrix soundtrack and in a nissan commercial back in the day. the rather bad amazon review is undeniable but "furious angels" and "left me for dead" aren't exactly chopped liver. I think. mostly :)

heavy rotation

rjd2my new favorite album: RJD2 since we last spoke. very groovy, very eclectic, very hard to compare to other music - although people and amazon try - which is a good thing
portishead dummycollaborations make it possible. my old faithful, there's still nothing like portishead dummy
portisheadanother must have for the library: portishead portishead
rob douganrob dougan's furious angels. soundtrack-y, or I should say score-y, (the track "clubbed to death" was made famous by the matrix and a nissan commercial) but catchy and addictive

very ew, xm radio

xm is awesome. the stations are awesome. the music on the stations are awesome. I love listening to second chances on discovery. I love no commercial and no djs and no radio edited versions of songs. but it's still JUST RADIO. for which I pay $10 a month. and it goes out every time I drive under an overpass. there are lots in LA. and now xm wants to gouge it's loyal customers by raising the monthly cost to $12.95. that is a big fucking jump. but wait, you can lock in a the low low rate of $8.33 a month when you pay for 5 years in advance for $499. $500 for radio, WHAT A BARGAIN

this is the best album since wyclef's "the carnival". not that they are that comparable other than they are full albums of wonderfulness. look at this list of credits! de la sol, mike patton, del tha funkee homosapien, jack johnson, julee cruise, dres from the black sheep, one song samples vivaldi and fat boy slim before transitioning into linkin park-ness. it's radness

kid robot

so last night we braved the crowds for the kid robot opening. an hour in line outside, an hour in line to get to the back of the tiny 20 yard deep store (if that), and then another hour to get back to the front where gary baseman was signing. 3 hours was a long time to get cranky and annoyed at all the people around us, namely the line cloggers who bought 3+ dumb luck figures to obviously sell on ebay. but gary was gratiously signing these attempts to make a buck off of him and taking the time to talk to everyone. he drew hotchachacha on my book :) love that guy!
vinyl will killcheck out this book at amazon, it's $13 off, damn! plus gary had on display 2 of his baby nabbers weeble punching bag type things (kinda like biskup's helper circus punks), very cool, can't wait for them to show up on his site

the stolen matrix

in this incredible story, sophia stewart will receive $2.5 billion in damages for the matrix 1, 2, 3 and the terminator movies!!! matrix fans are skeptical of her because they are "strangely loyal" to the wachowski brothers (siblings now that one is a woman?) and they'd have to be after the matrices 2 and 3 were so god damn awful but it makes sense now seeing as the matrix wasn't their story. I don't even like bound now, they've let me down that much!

rock steady sucked, there I said it

I have been a gwen and no doubt fan since day 1. I gritted my teeth when rock steady came out and tried to look the other way at her le sac collection but this lamb shit and her latest album have gone too far. she said she wanted to make dance music. ok fine. go off and make a dance album for djs to spin in the clubs. but after writing 20 songs, only 4 of which were good enough for the album, the process seemed to be taking longer than it should for such brainless music. the result? an un-upbeat unlistenable collection of plain old crappy pop. bad, gwen, bad! crawl back to tony, tom and adrian if they'll have you and make a new no doubt album on the par of tragic kingdom and return of saturn. PLEASE!!! for the rest of us starving fans, everything in time, the b-sides, will have to sustain us. ::siiiiiiiiiigh::

the killers

I'm not sure why I've been so slack as to not post about the killers because I was incredibly hyper to get their album as soon as I heard "somebody told me" on the radio. in fact the album is better than that song, the whole album is good. the whole thing! no one hit wonders here. mike and I even saw them perform live at the inland invasion concert and they were great. really great. sounded like their cd. were actually playing their instruments, instead of relying on studio production. I read an article that called them a mix of duran duran and the strokes and I'd have to say that's fairly accurate but don't let those 2 bands fool you, the killers is definitely more than the sum of its parts. they've also got a great site and a hot lead singer ;)

music rant

ashlee simpson
have you seen her shadow video? the one where she bags on her sister by donning a blonde wig as she acts like a brainless twit while she sings about how her parents never paid any attention to her but now it's ok that she's got a recording deal. the only reason she has a recording deal is because of the sister she's bagging on. bitter jealousy, that's a good look for her

snl BWAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA good for her milli vanilli ass! I love that she blamed her band who can play and sound exactly like her singing apparently. I bet they appreciated that. and her comment that maybe she made a few more fans? riiiiight keep dreaming. I am impressed however that she didn't shut down her message board when it was getting bombed, that's comedy!

puffy
is no sample to young to canibalize? getting enya to redo lauryn's "ready or not" backing vocals for that crappy song? good job

jessica
angels is a robbie williams song from a few years ago. I dont' know why but I think that's weird

trick daddy or something
has sampled crazy train complete with ozzy's AY! AY! AY! mashed in with lil jon's YUEAH!s ::shakes head::

afi
redid a NIN song, head like a hole possibly, and it's probably the worst cover I've ever heard of a song in my life. the band tries to play the song as close to the original as dearly possible - what's the point of that? you dont' want to do it in your own style? I can get the better original, why would you record your sloppy attempt? and the vocals - oh dear lord in heaven - painful. danzig wannabe.

dead kennedys
hands down favorite cover: "viva las vegas"

I ♥ Huckabees

mike really liked donnie darko apparently. really really. we saw I ♥ Huckabees last night and I thought it was a great movie, finally after the drought some decent movies! mike's verdict: "it's not as good as donnie darko." not that they are too comparable beyond the indie genre. I had heard quite a bit of criticism of the movie but found it to be unfounded. it was surprisingly well cast (at first I questioned the choice of a few of the actors) and mark walberg really came into his own. I love movies that make me keep thinking about them long after they are over and I've been thinking about Huckabees all day!

twentysomething

I just caught a live performance jamie cullum did for vh1 of twentysomething and musicians are back! I haven't been this excited since john pizzarelli (who incidentally went bossa nova on his last cd so appropriately titled I might add). and in other news usher had a legless yamaha piano in his latest video for him to stand and lie on but they scratched off a few letters - like people do to their toyota trucks so it ends up saying "yo" - so it read "amah"

donnie darko

I have finally seen donnie darko. the director's cut in the theatre tonight. last night I noticed 1.5 hours into it that it was on HBO and only got 2 stars. I dragged mike along who, was not only blown away by the fact that they filmed the entire movie in his high school, but actually really liked it. even gave it 3.5 stars of his own which is incredible for a non-war movie. I have no idea how to describe it so I won't go into details but will say it's a good one to have under your belt.

air talkie walkie

so it took me a long time to realize what a great band air is, like since the movie go came out until now. better late than never! I remember liking talisman at the end of the go soundtack and vaguely knowing they were french but it wasn't until I saw a levi's commercial where a young couple pushes a car off a bridge only for the guy to dive in after it to retreive his french-english dictionary with playground love playing in the background that I went, oh, air! the starburst commercial where a few people are walking, dipping their shoulders every so many steps to alpha beta gaga went right over my head too. then came the nissan armada commercial with surfin' on a rocket. cutest song ever. I started searching for air albums, I've had a chance to listen to 10,000 Hz Legend, Premiers Symptomes, The Virgin Suicides and Talkie Walkie. I'm sure Moon Safari is great as well since it includes talisman, but I can't stop listening to talkie walkie. run out and click that link!

muse absolution

muse absolution I ran out and splurged on 4 new cds today: maroon 5, kick ass rock with soulish jamiroquai vocals; modest mouse: they've been underground long enough, they can come out and play with their talking heads/pixies-like single "float on"; dialated peoples: I love hip hop that makes me feel like dancing; and muse: their "time is running out" single half the time reminded me of radiohead and half the time reminded me of placebo, both good things to me. but now that I'm listening to the cd, I hear less and less of the other bands and more of muse's original sound which is so eclectic and fresh, tossing in tons of piano and symphonic elements that just add without sounding like a cheesy inspiration movie soundtrack. how do they do it? who are these people? :) check them out, muse is gooooooood.

hellboy: the movie

where to start! how hellboy looked: surprisingly good. although in one scene his right hand of doom was on his left hand. oops. and his tail looked like a hotdog.

guillermo del toro as a director: his vision must have been to bring the comic book pages to life: success

guillermo del toro as a screenwriter: his vision must have been to put the comic book pages on screen: success

but comics don't work as movies, you can't just string little episodes together and expect the movie to have momentum. although there were action scenes, it wasn't an action movie. knowing the comic is almost the only way to appreciate what del toro was trying to do.

mike said he knew just as much/little about the xmen going into it but enjoyed it so much more. better screenplay.

bitter with baggage seeks same

I picked these up when I got my tim burton book, they're cute. my old roomie in sd introduced me to anne taintor, she had a magnet that said "if men are the answer, could we rephrase the question" and when her friend came for a visit got her a little notebook I think it was that said "she liked imaginary men best of all". cute cute.

triplets of belleville

triplet of belleville
we saw the triplets of belleville last night , the animation style was very cool and unique where everything was exaggerated: like the train track bridge built so close to the house it's pushing the 2nd story over, the ship that's miles tall, and mike liked that all the americans including the statue of liberty were enormously fat. go buy it!

the grey album

so everybody is buzzing about dj danger mouse's grey album: one part jay z's acapella black album, one part samples of the beatles' white album. EMI is having a heart attack and driving up the popularity of the album. I've heard it and I'm not blown away but alot of people over at metafilter are and think those that aren't either don't like hip-hop or don't understand how difficult this ambitious undertaking must have been. I think something so ambitious should be more fruitful. mark vidler's beatles' "a day in the life" vs. radiohead's "karma police" for instance is worthy of this type of fuss, but I guess I just don't understand hip-hop :P

kenna and while I'm at it, bp turned me onto this guy kenna about a year ago, some of his songs have really fantastic beats and then he kicks in like depeche mode/george michael/ric ocasek - I know but it works! I like "freetime", "man fading", "red man", and "I'm gone". oh duh, I just noticed from the cover art (I got the album in advance sans art) chad from the neptunes produced, no wonder it's got crazy beats. kennaonline.com used to be a pretty cool site but I see that they've changed it, maybe it's still cool but it froze my computer

big fish

big fishhow badly do I want to see tim burton's latest featuring ewan mcgregor? badly! I heard ewan on kroq this morning for 1 minute just as I pulled into work and there's just something about his scottish accent and sense of humor as he laughed off jokes of playing with albert finney that can be quite appealing... if you're into that sort of thing!
