gary taxali

the lust print arrived yesterday and not realizing the stock it was printed on I assumed it would come in a tube so when it came sandwiched in 4 pieces of foamcore and neatly wrapped in brown paper I let myself think for just a second that it was framed! it's incredible and the website can't do it justice. but that's not all! included was a postcard of this wine label signed "thanks jen - gary." stoked! the postcard read:

"this illustration was commissioned by the bonny doon vineyard for their 2001 freisa wine label. two well-respected wine critics have opposite opinions on the freisa. hugh johnson called the wine "immensely appetizing" while robert parker deemed the freisa "totally repugnant." bonny doon wanted an illustration that accompanied both quotes and the result is what you see here.

of course I decided I needed a bottle and got to digging. I haven't found the freisa 2001 but I did notice they have a selection of rieslings - yum - and found these other wines with taxali labels:
dewn sangiovese 2001
dewn nebbiolo/barbera 2001
dewn cigare alternative B 2002 (apparently already sold out)
nv bouteille call - framboisified port of syrah ;)

and this one especially caught my eye: the equisite corpse: primitivo 2003, "The Artists: In creating this exclusive bottling, we called upon three of our previous label artists to create a modern day Exquisite Corpse. Annabelle Verhoye, Gary Taxali and Grady McFerrin played a round of Exquisite Corpse, and the result - as you can see - was astounding. Note: $2.50 from every purchase goes towards funding for local Santa Cruz arts programs." now I'll be drinking for the children, won't you think of the children?! check out more bonny doon wine labels here. OMG!!! I had no idea that Gary Taxali had done wine labels. I gotta go find me some & toast my fabulous Taxali painting.
