best day of my life
me and GARY BASEMAN!
su jen, me, GARY BASEMAN, TIM BISKUP, and ken
this morning mike convinced me that it would be fun to drive an hour east to the kroq inland invasion show where we saw muse and the killers. if muse wasn't my favorite band before, they certainly are now. the 3 piece band made up of the lead singer, who played guitar and keyboards, bassist and drummer were a-mazing live. they sounded better than they do on disc and with no pre-recorded tricks up their sleeves. mike overheard some guy taking a wizz and talking on his cell saying "I don't know who they were, but they were great!" it was fun to see the lead singer duck out of his guitar and run to the keyboard in butterflies and hurricanes for his rach sounding interlude and get cheers from the crowd. the killers were also awesome live, sounded exactly like their cd and the lead singer who looks like a cute andrew mccarthy can actually sing. I take this as a good sign that the music industry is promoting more musicians and hopefully making a departure from the more marketing driven studio-only acts.
then we raced over to old town pasadena for the opening of tim biskup's bispop gallery in the johnson motors bookstore. not only did I get to meet tim, but gary baseman was there drawing art on and signing posters and anything else people could get in front of him. I had my qee book which he signed as I told him my parents-in-law live on his street and that I had seen his article in the larchmont chronicle and he took several minutes to talk to me about visiting his gradeschool on its 80th anniversary and presenting a PG version of his works, of course the student were enthralled and no one was upset with some of the racier stuff that slipped by. he also mentioned his alternative press article, such a gracious and amazing man, I'm a fan for life.
