garden state
hopefully most of my friends who haven't seen it that want to see it will be seeing it today so I can write about it without purposefully ruining anyone's expectations of the movie like some people I know! eg someone told me shrek 2 was the best movie ever and that puss in boots stole the show. exaggerate much? if you haven't seen garden state yet, don't continue reading.
we saw the movie at the grove. it was mega crowded, mega expensive ($12.50?! it wasn't even a big theatre. if I'm gonna pay that I'm going to the arclight where they have booze and no kids), and sold out so we killed time by walking to el coyote first. despite the problems it didn't sour my movie going experience. I thought the movie was very touching, had a wonderful sense of humor and really satisfying pacing. the cast was well ... cast, of course zach braff didn't disappoint, natalie nailed her role and how good is peter sarsgaard! (check out the salton sea while you're at it), method man even made a humorous appearance. the music perfectly complimented the nostalgic sense of the movie (check out frou frou's "let go" and travis' "love will come through" and get the whole postal service album if you haven't already). remember how bonkers everyone went for lost in translation? garden state is what they were talking about. there's a message board and zach braff is even keeping a blog. I read an interview he did where he "after quitting his job waiting tables, ... found out it would be four months before the "Scrubs" pilot was shot. So he spent the downtime writing the first draft of "Garden State." yeah, I was just bored really, thought I'd whip up a killer movie, it's nothing really !!!
