"DESIGN: JanSport's Backpacks to the Future
Brand consultancy Gyro Worldwide and JanSport have collaborated on the release of one-of-a-kind Super Break backpacks to celebrate JanSport's 25th anniversary. Artists from Gyro's clothing lines, G-Mart and Sailor Jerry, along with the design talents of Print Liberation, Fabric Horse, Beth Graves, Gerik Forston, Elsa B. Shadley and Pam Paparone, have created limited-edition Super Break backpacks "fusing combinations of hardware and materials with visions that blend fashion, art and architecture," according to Gyro. Super Break, in case you're still schlepping a Land's End tote, is the original JanSport daypack, created in 1979 by co-founder Jan Lewis, and it remains the top-selling pack. Beginning in July, these extravagantly artsy one-offs will be available in strange materials like fur, sequins, hand-knitted yarn and Band-Aids, but only on a web auction basis via the Super Break site (www.super-break.com) and eBay. The auction will run from July 1 to August 31, or until the bags are sold, with all proceeds benefiting Vox Populi, a nonprofit artists' collective in Philadelphia. At the same time, JanSport will be running an art school-focused national Super Break design competition, with top designs to be featured on the Super Break site. The winning design will be produced in a limited run next year, and the winning designer gets $1,000 cash. Leading off the showcase seen here is a Print Liberation design. Didn't you always want a toilet bringing up your rear?"
