another reason not to see the movie

as I mentioned earlier my reluctance for getting excited for the hellboy movie: the director guillermo del toro seems a little green, having directed 2 american movies out of 7: mimic and blade II. I didn't see blade II and people tell me it looked cool, but I did see and didn't like mimic but must admit I wasn't paying attention to specifically the direction. on to the screenplay for hellboy: written by the director (who's written 1 american screenplay: mimic) and another very green peter briggs for whom this will be his first project of 3, the other 2: alien v predator and highlander. god forbid they get the creator mike mignola involved.

then I read today that del toro planned to put hellboy's stone hand, his RIGHT HAND OF DOOM, on his left arm, so that the actor would still have the free use of his right hand. that is quite a liberal use of creative license. Posted by sugi_grl at March 30, 2004 04:55 PM

hey... who says you have to direct american movies to be a good director! (think Almodovar) :)

i was reading about Guillermo del Toro and:

- he was one of Time Magazine's 50 Young Leaders of the New Millennium before he made his 3rd film.

- his directorial debut, Cronos (1992), was winner of the critic's prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

- trivia: mia sorvino took the role in mimic partly on the advice of then-boyfriend and del toro fan quentin tarantino.

- about mimic: he was unhappy about the experience because of having to comply with hollywood studio demands. so he returned to mexico, formed his own production company and made a more personal thriller - The Devil's Backbone.

- The Devil's Backbone (2001) was produced by Pedro Almodovar & his bro Augustin Almodovar - and the movie was "hailed for its chilling atmosphere, intelligent complexity" and "confirmed del Toro's artistic promise and earned him more critical judos"

oh and mike mignola is involved (or so it appears?) - he's listed as "Book Author / Associate Producer"

it's not cranky and I knew you'd think I meant american movies are the only good ones - I only made the distiction because I haven't seen his non-american movies so I can't speak to them and hellboy will be an american movie where he will have to comply by hollywood standards which suck

as for mike mignola he is given credit as author of the comics that inspired del toro's screenplay, he wasn't involved

but who knows, it could be good, the geeks at ain't it cool saw screenings and loved it!
