the wanderer
stef sent me this story here to kick off the new "dog stories" category :)I found a grown up shepherd mix dog that was about 95 pounds wandering around my street the other day. I had Sampson in my car so I pulled over and held onto the dog for a bit trying to figure out what to do. It had no collar on but was sooo friendly. I took Sampy's leash of and left him in the car and walked the dog back to my house and put her in the back yard. She walked like a dream. I totally would have kept her. I went back to the car and drove home and put the dogs together. They got along well. She snapped at him a bit to protect herself but they got over it. Anyway, I was stressing out, not sure what to do because animal shelters are closed on Mondays for some reason. So I took her to the vet and she happened to be microchipped. Amazing. So the owner, who was a complete idiot, but very nice, came and got her. She told me how she finds her dog all over town and how she likes to wander. I said perhaps she cold get her a collar/tag. She said "Oh no, we don't need that because we keep her in a fenced yard"!!!!!! Morons your bus is leaving. She was such a loving dog. If I find her again, I'm keeping her. |
LOL! that like my friend's sheltie is a smarty and was always getting out of their fenced yard and she'd come home from work and the neighbor (a housewife) would have the dog...
one time, (after the housewife had just had her 1st baby), the dog got out and my friend and i come back after driving around the 'hood looking for him, and the lady has the dog... so my friend is all "thanks! sorry about this happening. we thought we had the problem fixed" (or something like that) and the lady made some comment like "thank god you don't have any children". :o
btw... digger looks so cute in his field of clover!
Posted by: jendhi at March 22, 2004 05:32 AMwe had a wanderer too (back when i was 6/7/8 or so)- our lab jingles (un-neutered). he would get out of the yard and eventually (hours later) he would come home. we got the occasional phone call - "your dog is in our yard"...
one time we get this call "your dog is in our house. is he friendly? he's in the room with our daughter who's playing atari" - ha ha ha.
another time, he came home with a sign taped to his back to keep him in the yard.
we neutered him years later, but it didn't fix the problem. we ended up having to lock the gates (he knew how to jingle the gate to get it open) and make sure he wasn't able to dig under any. but if a gate was ever left open/unlocked, he was out!
one time when he was 14, he made a run for it. after a few hours (my dad is a professional at leaving things open and losing track of pets, not noticing until hours have gone by) got really worried because he hadn't come home and we drove around looking but didn't see him. we went for a walk and there he was - asleep in the bushes of our neighbor's front yard around the corner. old guy was either too pooped to make it home, or he never got past that point!
but yeah - i hate it when people don't keep track of their pets.
