nike tomtom vs garmin 405/405cx
how it compares to the garmin 405front

back

compared to the nike sportband

the garmin 405 is wide on small wrists

the nike tomtom is even wider on small wrists

the garmin 405cx with velcro strap fits like a glove!

the nike tomtom time display is larger than the garmin but the garmin is pretty easy to read

garmin seems to locate satellites much faster, nike tomtom seems to take 5+ minutes

garmin allows you to see 3 (or up to 9 if you use 3 screens) fields of your choosing, nike tomtom allows 2 fields, the top field you can scroll thru by pressing buttons

garmin allows you to see your data when paused, nike scrolls thru the fields

garmin allows you to change your settings on the watch, nike you have to do on the computer. the only thing you can change on the watch is laps: on/off/manual or intervals on/off. also this screen stays on for a fraction of a second without interaction. backlighting also turns off almost immediately

nike loading screen seems to take forever but so does garmin when you're anxiously awaiting your run data

where you can administer data fields on the nike tomtom

where you can administer your intervals

PROS:
1. easy for an excited new runner to start logging miles and connecting with others on the nike site, dailymile, twitter and facebook
2. awesome battery life!
3. no extra cables! the usb built into the band is how you upload and recharge
CONS:
1. unable to customize fields and limited to only these fields: top scrolling: (real time) pace, distance, time elapsed, calories, time. large: elapsed time/lap elapsed time
2. unable to get average pace or lap pace. even garmin real time pace can be erratic but tomtom had me swinging from 18mm to 7mm depending on if I ran past a building
3. unable to set intervals on the fly
4. the fit is not very comfortable
5. for the price, just get a garmin on ebay! :)

nike+ is the pits
since I was so rudely denied from running in the nike women's half marathon again I signed up for the nike+ women's virtual half marathon. there is precious little information on it and no contact information for further questions. I called nike corporate and they gave me nike+'s number since of course that isn't on the website either and guess what, it's a fax machine. ::squealing noise in my ear:: thanks, that clears everything up!July 2, 2008

nike amp sucks
when it works it's great! but that's maybe 50% of the time. not enough to out weight how much it SUCKS
here are a few examples of what makes me lose my mind and look like a crazy schizo on the street:
1. next doesn't work, can't skip awful slow song, repeatedly hitting amp and holding arms in weird position while looking down and getting more and more frustrated
2. pause/play doesn't work, can't pause when I'm waiting at a light, repeatedly hitting amp and getting more and more frustrated that my min/mile pace is getting creamed
3. pause/play doesn't sync with nike+, after I hit the center button to start I immediately hit pause and do my stretches, then when I start running I hit play, music starts, nike+ hasn't, 5 miles later my run didn't get recorded
4. play/pause doesn't work, at a light, hit pause, maybe it actually paused, light turns green, hit play, hear "ending workout" GRRRRRR then I have to fumble with the ipod and quickly try to get up a basic mode to finish with
5. above scenario happens and nike amp actually puts pebble to sleep so now I have to reboot the ipod, not convenient in the middle of a run
I'm gonna switch to garmin which is way more accurate and way more informative and not deal with nike at all, clearly profits and not quality is all they care about. I've known that for years, I'm just a sucker for new gadgets.

2nd best weekend ever
what's a little mild hypothermia among friends? see how wet we are? it's not even 7am yet. fast forward to 11:30 and jen was blue, I couldn't perform simple tasks with my hands, and claudia took an hour long hot shower when we finally got home at 1pm. good times, good times :)
